Infant Development & Milestones Week 27

Your 27 Week Old Baby
A Parent's Guide to Infants

What's New For Infants

There is a big change in the relationship between your child and his food this month. Most parents will choose this month to move up to Stage 2 or even Stage 3 baby foods, which include chunkier versions of the baby's favorites as well as some beef and chicken entrées.

If you are continuing to make your own baby food at home, you don't have to worry about straining quite as much as before. Just make sure any texture in the food you make is small enough so that he won't choke on it. Also, make sure there are no leftover strings hanging around from fruits and vegetables that you have pureed that the baby could swallow and choke on.

Developmental Milestones*

Milestones are a funny thing; all babies reach them at different times and sometimes in different orders. They can also come as a surprise when you aren't expecting them, or with great anticipation when you know your baby is right on schedule.

At this point some babies are crawling, some are cruising, and some are still just sitting. Occasionally, some babies will even be walking around by now. Since the time frame for reaching milestones is so broad, be sure to ask your doctor if you think there is a problem with your baby's development.

What Might Concern You at 27 Weeks

concerned

While experts agree that it is impossible to spoil a child before age one, you might still be worried that picking up your baby when he starts to cry, is doing more harm than good. Sure, he is crying, you pick him up, you are meeting his needs…or are you?

Before picking up your baby at the first whimper, try figuring out WHY your baby is crying. Does he have a wet diaper, could he be hungry, is there a toy he can not get? Crying is still one of the only ways a baby can communicate when there is something they are not happy about so it is best not to assume that your baby just wants to be held.

If everything seems fine, and your baby won't stop crying, he might just need a little bit of comfort and attention that you holding him would bring. Don't worry that you are spoiling him, it just isn't possible.
