What's New For Infants

Your baby is capable of learning all types of games now, and there are lots of things you can do that will help all of his senses and skills mature. One of his favorites is probably peek-a-boo, which you more than likely perfected a few weeks ago.

Your baby probably likes to clap his hands to music and move his upper body. You can teach him finger movements with songs like Itsy-Bitsy Spider and This Little Piggy Went to Market. If you start pointing out parts of your face, like your eyes, nose, and mouth, your baby will learn which parts these words belong to and will start pointing to them as well.

Once your baby starts walking you can play Ring-a-Round the Rosey with him and Duck, Duck, Goose. These are all games that your baby should love.

Now that your baby can understand more of what you are saying, even though he cannot talk back, he might be able to understand what you are saying. If you ask him to "come here", your baby might be able to understand and either crawl or walk to you.

What Might Concern You at 39 Weeks

Your baby is now active, two to three times the size he was at birth, saying a few words, and eating from your plate. Why can't you give him cow's milk? You must remember that a baby's digestive system is not caught up with what his physical capabilities seem. Cow's milk could really harm your baby and should be steered clear of until you baby is one year, or your doctor gives you the ok.

If you want to start adding some yogurt and cheeses to your babies diet, that is ok. Your baby should be able to digest these. Just make sure they are made with WHOLE milk versus low-fat or skim. Your baby will need the fat in whole milk so once the doctor gives the ok, he should only have whole milk until he turns two.
